“The Twelve Days of Christmas” is an English Christmas carol that recalls a series of lyrically gifts given on each of the Twelve Days of Christmas, we have translated this into our own favorite fine foods and gifts that make the holiday season a truly tasteful time.

On the Sixth day of Christmas – our friend from Southhampton, New York – Kathleen with her legendary crispy cookie recipe now available with dark chocolate, walnuts, wholewheat floor and glutton free – all from Tate’s Bake Shop.

On the seventh day of Christmas – Anne Taintor, whose graphics and phrases have humored us for a decade now has a brand new recipe book to be even happier, a cocktail happy hour book.

On the eighth day of Christmas – from war time England in the early forties comes the phrase, Keep Calm and Carry On, which has many, many applications in our times, and is the perfect complement to a good cup of tea.

On the ninth day of Christmas – make time for a beer and although you will need a little time to brew it but it sure tastes good home-made – kits from Brooklyn Brew Shop!

On the tenth day of Christmas – While you are waiting for the beer to brew, our favorite NYC snack from the East Village Red Head Restaurant is Bacon Peanut Brittle, spicy, slightly sweet and smokey – you can not stop.

On the eleventh day of Christmas - Imported from the Aisle of anglesey in northern Wales, Halon Mon Salt, in original, smoked and with celery, with its clear sea flavor and delicate texture, it is the perfect finishing salt.

On the twelfth day of Christmas – Butter, sugar and floor with some tweaking, makes for the perfect bit of crunchy sweetness – Shortbread House of Edinburgh is why Scotland is famous for shortbread!

Now it is time to rest and think about next year!

Bi-Rite Market – Little Store with Big Ideas

Years ago when we were selling a good deal of imported wholesale food products, we did have this good customer in the Mission District of San Francisco with the unlikely name of Bi-Rite. They were always interested in the food we were importing – they looked carefully at the ingredients of everything they purchased.They were interested in buying products from smaller manufactures who were not selling to the big grocery stores.

Bi-Rite is run by Sam Monagnnnam. He grew up in the store which was owned by his father and uncle. In the 1980′s Bi-Rite was a working man’s grocery store that sold some food and a good deal cheap wine. After college, Sam had a variety of food related jobs, including working in Europe, where Sam experienced how food is primarily sold in smaller stores and shoppers had fewer choices than in the US. But the products offered in those small European stores had more quality and integrity.

Back home in San Francisco, Sam bought out his father and uncle, and transformed Bi-Rite into one of the most influential community markets in the nation. Now, when I visit San Francisco for the Winter Fancy Food, I always make it a point to stop there and see the business. And as I browse this great little store, I always recognize a few other food professionals sniffing around.

Sam will be in our store October 29 starting at 2 pm to sign his just published book Bi-Rite Market’s EAT GOOD FOOD. Come meet Sam, learn about his business that includes a farm and an adjoining ice cream business and pick up a copy of this Californian original’s passionate words about food and what we should eat.

Les Canelés de Céline comes to Chelsea Market Baskets

Les Canelés de Céline online pastry shop is coming to Chelsea Market Baskets for a limited time. Formerly, you could only purchase these sweets online for delivery or pick-up. However, for two days Sunday, May 1^st between 1-6pm and Saturday, May 7^th 11am-2pm, these treats will make there way to our store.

Céline Legros, a French business lawyer-turned- New York Baker, has introduced a line of French style mini pastries. Using an old family recipe as her foundation, Céline adds her own unique twist.

Originally, from South West of France Canelés , these delicious treats are made of crepe batter and slowly cooked at very high temperatures, which causes the outsides to become caramelized and the inside to stay deliciously moist. Flavors include vanilla, orange, lemon, lime and rum.

Finaciers are small mini French almond teacakes, similar to a sponge cake, usually contains some type of almonds, if it’s crushed, sliced or flavoring. These small cakes are light, moist and normally molded in a rectangle pan. Many say that the cakes are popular because they look like little bricks of gold. Céline has introduced her Financiers in 4 different flavors; plain, chocolate chip, almond and raspberry.

Don’t forget about Mother’s Day, this would be such a treat for that special woman in your life.

Sir Kensington’s Gourmet Scooping Ketchup Tasting

A new gourmet ketchup that is hand produced using vine ripened pear shaped tomatoes and some other all natural ingredients. The Fancy Food Show at Jacob Javits Center is June 27-29. It is a trade show that showcases all kinds of food products from around the country and the world. At the show, we learn about new products, meet producers, and network with people in the specialty food industry.

Summer Open House

Each year when the Fancy Food Show comes to NYC, we like to do a preview open house for our customers. Come by Saturday, June 27th between 1pm-4pm to meet, taste and save. The store will be full of owners and suppliers offering free tastings and answering questions about their products.

Nina Uppal- New York Delhi Snack mix from London, England

Nina has developed a line of Snack mixes with authentic Indian taste–we are lucky to be the first to carry it in the United States.

Elspeth Blitof- Rosebud Preserves from Yorkshire, England

Elspeth is the owner of Rosebud Preserves, established in 1989, her savory and sweet jams are made in small batches with local product.

Paul Cappelli- Villa Cappelli from Terilizzi, Italy

Paul will be sampling his selection of olive oils and dried herbs. Paul travels every three weeks to his farm in Italy to run the operations.
